HYALURONIC ACID: WHAT IS IT AND WHAT CAN IT DO FOR ME?
Welcome to our NEW BLOG at Å2B Skin Care!
And what better way to start than by telling you about one of our STAR ultra-hydrating active ingredients …
The already very famous and coveted Hyaluronic Acid .
We will start with the complex part, the scientific definition, and then move on to what interests us most… its benefits.
So, What is Hyaluronic Acid?
It is a compound polysaccharide , a substance that is found naturally in the human body in numerous tissues and organs such as: the epidermis (skin), connective tissue, cartilage, bones and the conjunctiva of the eye. The highest concentration of hyaluronic acid in the human body can be found in the epidermis, reaching up to 56% of the total concentration.
It is produced and accumulated mainly in the extracellular spaces, creating a type of network that allows moisturizing, absorbing, transporting nutrients between cells and eliminating toxic waste .
What is its function in the skin?
The role of Hyaluronic Acid in our skin is crucial as a connective tissue element, keeping it hydrated and creating volume. Basically, without hyaluronic acid , the skin would be dry, dull and wrinkled .
All the skin on our body has a network of collagen fibers , which are lubricated with hyaluronic acid , giving the skin its characteristic flexibility and allowing it to adapt to the movements generated by our body. It not only works as a lubricant for the skin, it also protects it by creating a natural defense against bacteria and external toxins.
As we age, our body loses its ability to produce hyaluronic acid, as well as other compounds such as collagen and elastin. This results in our skin losing firmness, flexibility to changes and its much-needed natural hydration. Unfortunately, we all know the consequences perfectly well.
For the above reasons, it is extremely important to maintain the levels of Hyaluronic Acid, Elastin and Collagen in optimal conditions , through a healthy diet and hydration , as well as with the constant use of products such as creams and serums that provide these active ingredients topically to your skin.
In our next post we will talk about the benefits of this wonderful asset.
